Diploma in Operation Theatre & Anaesthesia Technology (DOTT)

Role of Operation Theatre & Anaesthesia Technology

Operation Theatre and Anaesthesia Technology is a specialized paramedical programme that prepares students to become skilled healthcare professionals responsible for assisting surgeons, anaesthesiologists, and the surgical team during diagnostic, therapeutic, and emergency surgical procedures. Operation Theatre & Anaesthesia Technologists play a critical role in ensuring patient safety, maintaining a sterile surgical environment, preparing sophisticated surgical equipment, and supporting anaesthesia administration throughout the perioperative period.

The profession combines scientific knowledge with technical expertise in surgical procedures, anaesthesia techniques, infection prevention, patient monitoring, sterilization, emergency management, and operation theatre management. These professionals serve as an essential link between surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nurses, and other members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, contributing significantly to successful surgical outcomes.

Students receive comprehensive education in human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, operation theatre techniques, surgical instrumentation, anaesthesia equipment, medical gases, patient positioning, wound management, sterilization methods, biomedical waste management, and infection control. Equal emphasis is placed on ethical practice, communication skills, patient safety, emergency preparedness, and quality assurance.

The curriculum integrates classroom instruction with practical demonstrations, simulation-based learning, and extensive clinical exposure in operation theatres, intensive care units, emergency departments, and post-operative recovery units. Students develop competency in preparing operation theatres, handling surgical instruments, assisting in anaesthesia procedures, monitoring patients, maintaining aseptic techniques, and responding effectively to surgical emergencies.

Graduates are equipped to function confidently in modern healthcare settings by ensuring the smooth conduct of surgical procedures while adhering to the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and evidence-based clinical practice.
