Bachelor of Cardiovascular Perfusion Technology (BCPT)
Role of Cardiovascular Perfusion Technology
Cardiovascular Perfusion Technology is a highly specialized healthcare profession responsible for maintaining a patient’s circulatory and respiratory functions during open-heart surgeries and other complex cardiac procedures. Perfusionists operate the heart-lung machine, extracorporeal circulation systems, and other life-support equipment, ensuring continuous oxygenation and blood circulation while surgeons operate on the heart.
The profession demands exceptional technical expertise, precision, critical thinking, and teamwork. Perfusionists work alongside cardiac surgeons, anaesthesiologists, intensivists, and nursing professionals during complex cardiovascular procedures.
Students receive comprehensive education in cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, perfusion science, extracorporeal circulation, hemodynamic monitoring, cardiac pharmacology, blood conservation techniques, ECMO technology, and patient safety.
Clinical education provides hands-on experience in cardiac operation theatres, perfusion laboratories, intensive care units, and cardiac catheterization laboratories.
Graduates are employed in cardiac hospitals, transplant centres, ECMO programmes, research institutions, medical device industries, and higher education institutions.
